Definitions and Explanations
Marbling: Paint is floated on the surface of a
thick liquid called "size". The paint is swirled to create an image that is
then picked up on paper or fabric.
Acrylic paint: Acrylic pigments in a binder.
Standard artist's acrylic paints are used for marbling paper and
fabric. Paints which are specially formulated for
fabric are sometimes used for fabric painting. The paint adheres to the surface of the fabric.
It is permanent but can develop wear mark if it is handled very roughly.
Fiber reactive dye: The dye molecules bond with
the fibers in the fabric creating a permanent color.
Immersion dyeing: Fabrics are immersed in fiber
reactive dye. The fabric may be tied, folded, or scrunched to create a
pattern. Multiple dye colors may be used. Both the front and the
back of the fabric will have color.
Dye painting: Fiber reactive dye is applied to the
fabric using brushed, droppers, rollers, or other tools. This is a dye
process and the molecules of dye bond with the fibers. The "right" side of
the fabric tends to have stronger color than the "wrong" side.
